Hints and tips for skin care, using water.Article November 2003 © Copyright Lots of Luck Advertising So just what is skin? Would you believe that skin is an organ of the human body? Would you believe that the largest organ in the human body, is the skin? Well, it's true. Our skin is also mostly made up of water. Our skin serves us with a number of essential purposes. First, it helps to keep the other parts of our human body together in one unit (we'll just keep this to a summary as we don't want anyone to be grossed out by details). Second, it helps to keep bacteria and germs from getting inside our bodies. Third, thanks to the nerves in our skin it provides a sense of touch, such as helping us to feel sensitivity to warn us of heat and cold, and to feel pleasure from someone else's touch. Our skin has other purposes as well, but the three mentioned ones are the main purposes. As the skin is our largest organ, and it serves many beneficial purposes, would you agree that it would be a good idea to properly maintain the skin? Skin care should apply to taking care of your skin both internally and externally. Taking care of the skin through internal means, involves a few different methods:
Your body uses water internally through a number of ways and purposes, and we'll list just a few. Water is used in perspiration, to help to cool the body including the skin. Water is used to help digest foods and liquids. Water is also used to help clear the body including the skin, of specific toxins. There has been a rule of thumb that people have used for decades, that a person needs to drink 8 glasses of water a day. How big is a glass? Have you been to a department store lately? There is a myriad of sizes for glasses, so it can be confusing as to the amount of water to drink in 8 glasses, as 8 glasses of one size may contain as much water as 24 glasses of another size. The problem with this rule of thumb is that it is hard to apply to everyone, as everyone is different. As everyone is different in their size, their weight, their diet, their health, their exercise routine, their age, and any medications a person may be on, it is important to consult with your doctor to determine what is the appropriate level of drinking clean water each day to meet your own personal requirements. Taking care of our skin through external means, involves a number of different facets, but we will just focus on the one, which is water. Water is good for the skin. Water is important to help clean skin, as water (along with an appropriate skin cleanser) can help free dirt from your skin and wash it away. Dirt itself can be visible, as well as not visible. Both kinds of dirt if not removed can clog pores, allowing bacteria and skin conditions to develop. Check with your doctor prior to using a skin cleanser, to ensure that the skin cleanser is appropriate for your own personal requirements. Some skin cleansers may dry or irritate your skin. As everyone's skin is different, a skin cleanser that affects one person may not affect another. Unfortunately it is often a 'trial and error' process, to find a skin cleanser that works well with your skin. You know the saying, "...too much of a good thing...", well it can apply to water too. You would think that water would be a good moisturizer for skin, as water is wet. Well it's true to a degree. Water if used to excess is also something that may end up drying your skin, and may cause skin conditions to develop. A simple explanation here. Water when used on the skin is usually mixed with something, like a skin cleanser, soap, shampoo, even chlorine in swimming pools and hot tubs. These products and ingredients may dry and irritate skin if they are overused. Use common sense so that you don't overuse soaps and cleansers even when they are used with water, and that you don't stay in swimming pools and hot tubs for too long. Even soaking in a bathtub for too long, may affect your skin (you know, the temporary 'prune' toes and fingers look).
